Engagement Activity (1 minute)
Exodus 14 – Preparing to Hear the Story
Teacher Narration (read aloud):
I want you to imagine something for a moment. You are standing in front of a very wide sea. You cannot see the other side.
Now you hear footsteps behind you. They are loud. You turn around and someone is coming after you.
The sea is in front of you. The danger is behind you. There is no easy way to escape.
How would you feel right now?
(Allow a few children to respond with one‑word answers.)
You might feel scared. You might feel worried. You might want help.
What would you do if you were there? Would you stand still? Would you call out for help?
(Brief acknowledgment of raised hands.)
This is exactly the situation God’s people were in.
Today we are going to hear what God did when there was no way forward—and how He showed that He is a God who rescues His people.
Expound: Tell the Story (5-10 minutes)
1. Mention the historical situation.
2. Begin: “This is a true story from God’s
Word.”
3. Tell accurately with gestures/pictures.
(Accurate/Transferable/Contextual/Short)
Explain (Before or after the story – not during):
1. Share insights and biblical principles.
2. Compare with Jesus or NT when appropriate.
3. Identify Christian virtue(s): Faith – We trust God to make a way.
4. Apply an example to real life.
Note: Learning to read the full passage and accurately retell a short version is part of the personal development of the teacher.
#7 Expand
Do 2 or 3 of the following as time permits. The teacher does not have to do everything listed – just choose according to the time permitted.
A. Retell the Story so the students can memorize it.
If possible, tell the story again so the students can memorize it.
B. Craft
Moses Crossing the Red Sea
Interactive Trifold Craft (Crayons + Construction Paper)
Materials
- 1 sheet white construction paper (standard 9×12 works best)
- Blue construction paper (light and/or dark blue)
- Crayons (especially blue, brown, black, tan, green)
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Pencil
- Optional: cotton balls for waves, brown crayon for ground
Step 1: Fold the Base (Important)
- Lay the white paper landscape (wide side horizontal).
- Fold both sides inward:
- Left side to about 25%
- Right side to about 75%
- The two flaps should meet or slightly overlap in the middle.
When closed: The sea is “closed”
When opened: The crossing is revealed
Step 2: Draw the Inside (Sea Open)
Open the paper flat.
Inside layout:
- Draw two tall walls of water on the far left and far right
- Leave a wide path down the center
Crayon work:
- Color the water blue with wavy lines
- Add darker blue streaks for depth
- Draw ground (brown or tan) along the bottom center
Step 3: Add Crossing Stick Figures
On the inside center path:
- Draw simple stick figures walking across
- Add: long robes (triangle shapes) sticks or bundles. One figure at the front can be Moses
- taller holding a stick facing forward
Step 4: Draw Moses + People on the Outside
Close the flaps.
On the FRONT (when closed):
- Draw blue water across both flaps
- The seam between flaps becomes the “middle of the sea”
- Draw small wave shapes along the edges
On ONE SIDE flap:
- Draw people standing, waiting to cross
On the OTHER side flap:
- Draw Moses, arm raised with his staff toward the sea
When closed, the sea is all water and no one can pass.
Step 5: Add Blue Paper “Water Walls”
Cut two tall, wavy-edged rectangles from blue construction paper.
- Glue one on each inside side
- Let them slightly curve inward
- These create a 3D water wall effect
Optional:
- Tear the tops instead of cutting for a rough wave look
- Add cotton ball foam at the tops
Step 6: Final Touches
- Outline figures in black crayon
- Write at the top (optional):
“God Made a Way”
or
“Moses Crosses the Red Sea – Exodus 14”
